This mask is dedicated to a type of embroidery called huichol, a textile craft practiced primarily by women in the region of Santiago Ixcuintla in Nayarit, Mexico. These artisans are called huicholes and they claim that they follow the voice of the gods when they embroider, creating patterns arnd represenations with deep spiritual meanings. The inspiration for this mask comes from the bag hanging on the man you see above. His name is Mariano Valadez Navarro and he is a promoter and designer of huichol textiles, working as a director for a team of women embroiderers. We look forward to show you more huichol artwork in the future.
